The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has recently condemned the hike in the daily minimum wage, stating that it would badly influence the apparel industry as well as other small to medium-sized factories.

FTI revealed that the apparel industry in the country might have to put greater efforts in order to remain competitive with its neighbors – Vietnam and Malaysia, as wages are two-three times higher in Thailand in comparison to its neighbors.

Further, it has also noted that big enterprises would hardly be influenced by the hike in wages. It urged the government to come up with a national labor policy that would ensure that wages are fixed according to the skills of the employees.

FTI had already discussed the issue of new wage structure and submitted an appeal to the government asking for further review.

The National Wage Committee has decided to increase the daily minimum wage by between 8-17 baht throughout the country. The wage hike, with a rise of 6.7% on an average, is going to raise the average minimum wage to 176.3 baht per day and is expected to be effective from 1st January, 2011.
